I needed someone to sit down and talk to me about life but I had to work it all out for myself. Amanda had left school at 16, before the end of the school year. But, even while there, she said she missed sex education and said that most of her information about sex came from friends ‘going on about it’. Yet their reports of sex were very different from her own experiences: Most of my friends, they slept with, like, most of the school…but I never slept with any of them…the first person I ever slept with was my current boyfriend, and then I had a baby with him.

The negative reaction from Rebecca’s partner was reinforced by his family, who felt strongly that Rebecca should not continue with the pregnancy: None of his family wanted us to keep her and then we split up when I was seven months pregnant. They thought that we were too young and that I would ruin his life. They said that it wasn’t his child and that I’d slept with someone else – they wanted him to have tests done. They sat in the local pub working out when we had sex and stuff like that. Despite the reactions of others, Rebecca did not even consider an alternative to having her baby since it was something that she really wanted.
