When he broke in with the New York Yankees, he ignored the unspoken rules that rookies should be seen, not heard. Off the field Leo overspent on clothes and the night life. On the field he sparred verbally with everybody, teammates and opponents alike.

When it worked, Bobby Thomson hits the “shot heard round the world” and, three years later, the Giants sweep the Indians. When it did not work, or more accurately, when the nation’s zeitgeist passed Leo’s ethnic Catholic world by, the result was the ’69 Cubs. The “grace” here is not proclaimed, so Leo’s successes seem less conspicuously Christian — and his failures often spectacularly un–Christian — than Protestant major leaguers.
