It is absolutely necessary for the pitcher and the coach to be committed to the lesson at hand and to stay focused on the area of priority. There are specific fundamentals in all three areas that need to be developed. All of the movements in each of the areas should be considered and explored with vigor. Beginning with the feet and moving upward through the head will pay great dividends. Not only does this provide a sequence of teaching and learning, but it helps align the body and develops balance.

Each of us has some instinct, but most skills are learned. There are specifics involved in teaching. For instance, timing, setting, motivation, and understanding are all to be considered. This book will show how these are used in the teaching of pitching. Follow-through and getting on top of the ball are often discussed among pitching coaches. Pushing off of the rubber and releasing the ball too early are of equal concern. Developing rhythm is of interest to pitchers and pitching coaches. These are all covered in this book.

The pitcher should lead with his front hip. The front foot is relaxed, the front hip elevated and the front shoulder closed. With the shoulders relatively even and the belt line higher in front, the back knee should coil in toward the target. The pitcher should lift the heel of the front leg with the toe leaving the ground last and then pick the knee up in a line directly toward the right outside part of the chin.
