Wilcox was exercising a general sort of leadership on the left part of the line, but he no longer commanded anything like a brigade.

Hill was not sure that his orders from Longstreet authorized this; after all, he had been directed to move up and support Anderson. 11 Anderson, who was actually responsible for directing the action, was not consulted by anyone.
