To make the settings, you must first choose the appropriate settings category by opening one of the tabs in the Project Settings dialog box (General, Debug, C/C++, and so on). Note that some tabs, such as Link, appear only when you’ve selected the name of an entire project in the left pane, because the settings they contain affect the creation of the executable file for the project, not the processing of individual source files. To gain some practice in changing settings, first select the Win32 Debug configuration in the Settings For: list so that the change you make will affect the processing of files only when you build the debug version of your program.

It then shows you how to take advantage of some of the convenient new features of C++. The chapter, however, stops short of presenting C++ classes or any of the features that require classes; this is postponed until Chapter 4. It might take you a while to master the effective use of classes and restructure your programs to take advantage of them.
