Procedure Set the pitching machine so that it throws ground balls about 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 m) to the third-base side of the cone. Adjust the distance based on the age and ability of the players. The first player in line moves in front of the cone and takes a ready position. The coach feeds a ball into the pitching machine. The player reacts, uses a crossover step, gets to the ball, fields it, and throws to first base. As soon as the first player fields the ball and throws, the next player moves in front of the cone, assumes a ready position, and awaits the next ball.

The fielder, by being quick on his feet or with his hands, can save the thrower the work of having to chase down the bad throw and the game can continue uninterrupted. Coaches should start the stopwatch when the first throw is made and then count how many throws are made in a given period. When a throw is errant and not caught, the ball goes back to the point of origination of the bad throw and the game continues.
