He called Earl to his office. " Mr. Mack asked his son. "Yes, daddy," Earl answered. " Mr. Mack immediately called in his secretary and had a check made out to me. At his age, it had sort of slipped his mind. But once he discovered he had made a promise, he was going to keep it. A few years after I had been traded to Detroit, the Tigers had my brother, Skeeter, up at the park for a tryout. He was a second baseman and worked out for a few days. Red Rolfe was the manager and I asked him if the Tigers were going to sign him.

It never occurred to me how many people I might be touching through my broadcast on any given night. It finally struck me after I had to call it quits in the winter of 1997. I had reached a point where I could no longer physically do the Tiger broadcasts. I could still call the games; I still love baseball Page 5 and broadcasting as much as I ever did. But after my back operation, I wasn't able to move around and do the kind of traveling that the job demands. When I retired, though, I honestly felt that hardly anyone back up in Detroit would notice the difference.

Church has always been a very important part of my life. If I wasn't out of town playing a game or broadcasting a game, I can never remember a Sunday in my life where I wasn't at the Swifton United Methodist Church for Sunday morning services. Even when I was just a kid, I loved going to church. What I liked about it when I was young is that it gave me the chance to put on my best clothes. I only had but one set, but that one set was the best Sunday-go-to-church outfit anyone had seen. I walked into that church like I had just walked off Madison Avenue.
