Here is how Lawrence Carrington, one of the linguists concerned with the question, analyses the problem as it exists in Trinidad and Tobago. This analysis could, however, be ap plied to any of the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean. Accord ing to Carrington (1978a: 15),traditionally there was a great deal of correspondence between the pupils, the teachers, and the educational goals, at the level of language. Pupils would have had relatively ad equate exposure to English. The teachers would have had reasonable competence in English.
Had not been raised as part of the political debate in that country. One result of this was that the question of official language policy had to be raised within the context of a consultation on education, which restricted the scope of the discussion that was possible. Another result was that a large part of the discussion was spent dealing with language prejudices and various misconceptions, rather than with the main issues. In view of the situation, those who supported the wider use of Creole thought it wise not to press the matter further for the time being.
