For the Old English lexical evidence, some 150 Norse loans altogether, the studies by Hans Peters (1981) and Sara Pons-Sanz (2007) are of particular value: The overview by Peters13 distinguishes five main areas of borrowing: I. seafaring, II. law, III. ranks of society, IV. warfare, V. 14 Peters demonstrates that most terms are attested in texts related to the Danelaw, in particular the laws of Ethelred for the Danelaw and the laws of Cnut. Further terms occur in the two Northern versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Mss D and E, but also in charters and glosses.

I have always based my analyses and assessments on linguistic criteria, and on the whole, my results have been well received, perhaps because the linguistic material on which my conclusions were based, was more extensive than that presented in previous scholarship. After my book Old English and the Continental Germanic Languages had appeared in 1981, I was criticized in print by a Danish colleague for not paying sufficient attention to the systemic parallels and differences between the early Germanic languages.
