Not that I was one. But I’d always viewed the police as the enemy, so that was a start. Through the guys I was meeting I’d started playing poker even more. I was only sixteen but I was always older than my years and, at six-foot-one, I measured up to the older guys physically. A lot of these fellas were about twenty-five and were the top tough guys in the area. Guys like Terry Willis and Stuart Herring. They would turn up at our house to pick me up and my mam or dad would answer the door to these two blokes, suits and gold jewellery, looking like Hull’s answer to the Krays.

And unlike the other thing I liked whipping out to impress girls, I could play the guitar in public. The school band was definitely a good aid to pulling. I’d already started off young with Catherine, so by the time I got to fourteen I was a randy bastard. But you had to use the power of rock wisely or you might come a cropper. I found this out one Christmas during the school concert. I did my usual act on stage, singing and playing guitar, which went down a storm. But when I got off the stage, there was a gang of girls waiting for me.

Amazing how many kids it took to put him out, though – they just didn’t have enough piss between them. But I did get six lashes of the cane on both hands for accidentally throwing a dart into the caretaker’s daughter’s arse. You’ve never seen such a rough lot of kids in your life. Or at least I hadn’t. And I lived in Hull – I hadn’t been sheltered. They were right rough bastards. And that’s coming from me, someone who wasn’t exactly Little Lord Fauntleroy. This school was like a cross between St Trinian’s and Alcatraz.
