Although now forgotten, composers such as Nikolai Roslavets (1881-1944), Alexandr Mosolov (1900-73), Arthur Lourie(1892-1966), Vladimir Deshevov (1889-1949) and Gavriil Popov (1904-72), to name but a few, attracted international attention at the time and were praised by the likes of Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Treemonisha proved to be a far more expansive and consuming musical project. His best-known compositions are his operas, concertos, and quintets for woodwind instruments. Although jazz has made use of many musical structures including blues, tango, African and Indian music; its most basic form is the 32-bar format of the American pop song, many of which by such noted composers as Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, the Gershwin Brothers, Rodgers and Hart, Vernon Duke, and others, constitute the foundational repertoire of jazz.

His work was very unique, and his use of intertwining melodies and the fugue are trademarks of his genius. Despite the formidable obstacles the Guild faced, most cursory accounts conclude that the organization fell apart due to “racial tensions.” While this thesis is true to a large extent, I hope to have shown that by actually investi- gating these tensions, rather than bracketing them off as a supposedly self-evident explanation, we come to a greater understanding of the conditions under which these musicians worked, as well as the discursive tools they used to define themselves and their communities.

Jazz has deep spiritual and aesthetic roots in the black church and in the black tradition in general. The name for this period (Renaissance) is a French word which means "rebirth". So they talked for a while about nuclear physics and existential philosophy and had a great time. That�s why so many fusions are first, meetings of styles and only secondarily, if that, joinings of sensibilities. Serious classical music, of depth and sophistication, also wasn’t around…only “surface” and popular classical music made it to my ears.
