The stories highlight the psychological terrors of the second World War, British colonialism, women coming to terms with their own growing independence, and even works that critically question the psychological desire to hear stories of the macabre.

For this reason, Urn & Willow could be considered educational for high school students notwithstanding its violent content. It’s elegant, beautiful (done in Alden’s more recent pencil-sketchy style that shifts into full color on the last page, almost like a Wizard of Oz effect) and captures the tone and rhythms of being a particular age in the city.
