But Spanish authorities attacked card playing and dancing far more than athletics in their reports to their Mexican superiors. This is an interesting glimpse into the subject, but far more work needs to be done on sport along Spain’s northern frontier. De la Teja’s research was preceded by Jodella Dyreson’s (1997) path-breaking study of sporting activity at the end of the colonial era in Texas, a work notable not least for its inclusion of women’s activities, such as quilting contests and sewing bees, as appropriate subjects of study.
